Greg Holmes playing NS/Stick
[an error occurred while processing this directive]

Hello! I'm Greg Holmes, owner of GH Services. I've been a musician, composer, producer, and technical specialist for over 30 years, involved in everything from rock and pop, to jazz and classical. I play many instruments, like the usual guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards, but also unusual instruments, such as the Chapman Stick. To the right, I'm playing my 8-string NS/Stick, which is a combination of guitar and bass. Find out more about my musical endeavors at www.gregholmes.com.

Studio Showroom

You can visit my studio showroom here in the heart of Niagara, where you can try out gear in a no-pressure environment. I'll never try to sell you something that you don't want or need. Bring your own equipment and compare. Neighbours are not a problem - so let's crank it up! The location of my showroom is not posted online, so contact me first for directions and appointment time. I'm flexible, unless I'm gigging, conducting a seminar or demonstration, making a pickup or delivery, or researching. You might also find me dropping in at a gig to give a band the chance to try some gear. :-)

I have associated locations in New York and Florida to assist with shipping and warranties, and I maintain a network of customers you can talk with. In addition, there are some items that are currently travelling around as demos.

I also sponsor and host public seminars to present equipment, and I make "road trips" to remote locations to show the gear. So, if you and a bunch of fellow musicians would like to see some of it, contact me and let's see what we can arrange!

Here's my perspective of the niche that I fill.

I am a consulting specialist providing a service to professional musicians, semi-professionals, and serious non-professionals. I spend a considerable amount of time researching and evaluating new products, and I have a deep knowledge of the concentrated line of products that I carry. In fact, in many cases, I've had input into the design of the products and can customize them to suit your needs (see list below). Yes, I am the manufacturer's representative, but I'm also your advocate, acting as an interface to bring everyone together.

My goal is to find unique and high-quality products and provide them to my extended family of customers to solve their needs. I'm always looking for items that are not available in local music stores or from the big online retailers.

I believe that there is a need for local music stores, big Internet stores, and one-on-one specialists like myself. The music stores provide a place to try out consumer-level music products, and their staff has a good knowledge of the common product lines. The big Internet retailers provide the many popular items and will ship them anywhere, but usually there's nobody to talk to about product functionality. On the other hand, a specialist like myself has specific products and a deep knowledge of them.

Generally, if something is available at a local store or online retailer, I won't carry it. Unless, of course, you ask for it! That's because I want to be your personal technical assistant and help you in any way that I can. Just let me know, and I'll get on it!

I started GH Services in the early 1980's, featuring the Fairlight Computer Musical Instrument (or CMI for short). The CMI is an Australian-made digital sampling computer, which was used to create unique audio tracks. I have a well-respected Fairlight site here. For several years, I was a freelance "hired gun" around the Toronto area, providing the Fairlight CMI and my technical and musical services for rock bands, composers, video production companies, and music studios.

In the 1990's, I shifted towards computer programming and consulting, working with various companies, and specializing in database and communication technology. I also created and taught computer programming courses.

Music and technology have always been favorite topics of mine, and in 2002 I began my relationship with BassLab of Germany. The owner of BassLab, physicist Heiko Hoepfinger, has used his knowledge of materials to create a unique tunable composite that has fabulous acoustic properties. The other products I represent are also considered best-of-breed. Taken all together, they complement and enhance each other.

Because I believe that my customers should not just settle for off-the-shelf products or what is already available, I sometimes get involved in design and development. Here are some achievements:
